Christina Bruland

Christina Bruland’s art revolves around her interest in language, as well as people’s inherent need to communicate with each other and the outside world. In recent years, Bruland has mainly investigated sign language and visualization of auditory forms of communication.

In the exhibition Form For Fortelling at BOA, Bruland delves into the fleeting and spontaneous language. The non-written words move among the ever-present background sounds, and together they form new, complex language images second after second. These words can be conveyed both in spoken language and in sign language, they can be spoken, shouted and sung. Bruland works with ways to “capture” the words, and hold them so that they become tangible forms.
In Form For Fortelling, textile works, sculptures and sound works are presented. The motif of the textile works refers to speaking voices, while the tactility of the works refers to the starting point of the voice: the body. Impressions of plaster can be seen in plaster sculptures of hands, which solidified statements in sign language. These physical elements are intertwined with two sound works that lie like a blanket over the exhibition rooms and connect the works together into one unit.

Christina Bruland (born 1983, Drøbak) lives and works in Oslo. Bruland completed his master’s degree at the Academy of Fine Arts in Oslo in 2017, with semesters at the Akademie der Bildende Künste München and the Malmö Academy of the Arts. Bruland also has a bachelor’s degree in sign language and interpretation from the University of Oslo.
